School Counselling

Providing strategic, timely and personal interventions when required.

Recognising that every individual is unique, our school counsellors play a key role in customising educational experiences to enhance capabilities, close achievement gaps among high and low performing groups, and support positive choices.

Students, parents and teachers can access our school counselling programme. By providing prevention-based workshops and counselling support for students with specific social or emotional concerns, we aim to make our school a healthy and balanced learning environment.

At BBIS, we believe:

  • All students possess the power to manage quality, growth and satisfaction in their lives
  • Each student’s abilities, talents and interests should be recognised and nurtured
  • All students deserve to be treated with dignity and respect
  • All students, through lessons, groups and activities, can be guided to function successfully in a rapidly changing global society

We continually evaluate our counselling service to ensure it is data-driven and responds to the needs of our diverse community.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL COUNSELLORS

BBIS school counsellors are trained at a postgraduate level in school counselling, counselling psychology or social work – and have years of invaluable experience helping children, adolescents and their families in multi-ethnic and multilingual learning environments. They all hold membership in professional organisations such as the International School Counsellor Association, the American School Counsellor Association, the British Psychological Society and the UK Association of Solution-Focused Practice.

There are dedicated counsellors for the Primary School, Secondary School and Boarding School, as well as specialist Career and College Counselling.

PRIMARY SCHOOL COUNSELLING

In the primary years, students are developing their academic self-concept and feelings of confidence as learners. Decision-making, communication and life skills are also developing, as are character values. It’s also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family.

Our comprehensive school counselling programs provide education, prevention and intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. We believe that early identification and intervention is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement; and that education in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development during these primary years serve as the foundation for future success.

SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELLING

As students take the final steps towards adulthood and the world of work, they begin separating from parents and exploring and defining their independence. They are working out who they are, what they are good at, and what they want to do when they graduate.

During these adolescent years, students are evaluating their strengths, skills and abilities. They face increased pressures regarding risk behaviours involving sex, alcohol and drugs, while exploring the boundaries of more acceptable behaviours and mature, meaningful relationships.

Our Secondary School Counsellors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. They do not work in isolation. Rather, they are integral to the total educational program – providing proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help the student achieve success in school.

CAREER AND COLLEGE COUNSELLING

The high school years are full of growth, promise, excitement, frustration, disappointment and hope. Students are discovering what the future holds for them. Career and College Counsellors offer programmes and support to enhance the learning process and promote academic achievement.

Our goal is to help students achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set appropriate career goals and realise their full academic potential – so they become productive, contributing members of the world community. To achieve this, we show them how to make concrete decisions; and how to deal with academic pressures as they face high-stakes testing, the challenges of college admissions, the scholarship and financial aid application process and entrance into a competitive job market.
