Student Leadership

BBIS offers many exciting opportunities for students to learn about leadership.

CREATING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Germany is a world leader in recognising the importance of the rights of children and young people. As one of the first European states to turn the UN Rights of the Child into law, Germany advocates for young people to have a genuine democratic voice in decision-making within schools. BBIS is absolutely committed to this vision.

Whether it’s team captaincy in sport, leadership of an outdoor education programme, or membership of our Model United Nations Club or our Human Rights Club, there are many ways that students can experience leadership and governance. These opportunities help them learn about the importance of social responsibility, effective interpersonal skills and taking action.

Over the last 30 years, many BBIS graduates have moved on to take up leadership roles in companies, communities and countries. We are proud of the role we play in enabling students to reach their full potential to become leaders – in whatever capacity they wish to serve.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS

The Student Ambassadors Programme is all about fostering a sense of belonging amongst new students and the wider BBIS student community.

Our Student Ambassadors are a diverse group of caring and open-minded volunteers. We provide them with leadership and communication training, and then partner them with new students as they arrive. Not only does this build a stronger feeling of community cohesion and responsibility among students, but it also helps to settle new students and strengthen connections with their classmates.

Student Ambassadors are warm, friendly and caring. They enjoy meeting and helping new people, are good at talking and listening to people, and are keen to share their inside knowledge with others.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Working cooperatively with BBIS students and teachers, the Student Council represents the student body and contributes to the BBIS community. As the voice of all students, our Student Councillors play an active role in building the supportive, happy and respectful environment that BBIS is renowned for.

Student Council representatives are selected by their classmates to serve on the Council for one year.

In Primary School, representatives from the Grades 1-5 homerooms meet every week during their lunch break to discuss school issues.

In Secondary School, the Student Council meets regularly under the guidance of a teacher representative and the school counsellor. Class Representatives and the Executive (Student Council President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary) are democratically elected by the student body.

This Student Council acts as a conduit between students and faculty. Its goals are to:

  • Enhance the learning experience at BBIS

  • Voice student opinions to the administration

  • Train students in leadership

  • Support other student organisations such as the Human Rights Club, Student Ambassadors, Gay/Straight Alliance and more

Within the Secondary School, we are committed to the principles of student government. Our students are given considerable autonomy in the governance of their affairs – we believe this promotes leadership, self-confidence and self-reliance, while also teaching important lessons about freedom, privilege and responsibility.

A Middle School Student Leadership Team plays an important role in decision-making for all issues relating to Grades 6 to 10. This team is aligned to the house system, with each house electing two students as leaders at the beginning of the school year. They meet with their houses regularly and act as advisors to students across Grade levels.

Peacemakers

Peacemakers are Primary School students who listen and actively help others to find peaceful and fair solutions to daily conflicts or problems.

At BBIS, Grade 4 and 5 students can participate in peer mediator training to become Peacemakers. They learn about the BBIS Peace Bridge, as well as how to become compassionate listeners and reflectors, and how to resolve conflicts. There is one full-day training session, followed by shorter sessions during lunch and recess.

Once they have completed the training, our Peacemakers join a roster to work in pairs during lunch and recess. When on duty, their job is to ask if disputing students want help in finding a peaceful way to resolve their conflicts. Peacemakers also share their knowledge and skills at assemblies and by visiting classrooms and helping students to understand and practice the BBIS Peace Bridge.

Peacemakers believe that:

  • Conflict is natural and an opportunity to learn

  • Students can solve their own problems fairly

  • Students are caring and responsible people

  • Conflicts can be resolved peacefully
