Can I arrange a meeting with a school representative to see the facilities and find out more about the admissions process?

How big are the classes at BBIS?

It varies from year to year. Generally, our classes have between 16 and 20 students.

How can I apply?

You can start an application to attend BBIS at any time. Before you get started, you may want to read about how to apply.

What are the age requirements?

To join our Early Education class, your child must turn three by 30 September in the year they start. Students can only start once they have turned three years of age.

To enter Grade 1, students must turn six by 30 September.

Placement in higher grades will depend on both your child’s age and their previous schooling system, with final decisions made by the respective Principal(s).

Please note that BBIS does not enroll students who will reach their 20th birthday before the date of their graduation.

Is it possible to enroll mid-year?

BBIS has rolling admissions for students applying for Early Education to Grade 10. In Grades 11 and 12, however, we are unable to accept mid-year enrolments because we only offer the two-year IB Diploma Programme.

Is there an application deadline?

Given that we allow students to enroll at any time during the year, there is no deadline to apply for Early Education through to grade 10.

If you wish to join BBIS in Grades 11 and 12 for our two-year IB Diploma Programme, we recommend applying no later than May in the year you wish to start.

How long does the admissions process take?

This can depend on the documentation required and the volume of applications we are processing. It can take up to six weeks. Learn more about the application process.

Do I need a German address to apply?

You can apply from anywhere in the world! Please use your current home address when completing the application form – we will send the school contract to this address. Then, if your family is moving to Germany, you can update your contact details when you arrive.

Do students wear a uniform at BBIS?

No, not for general classes. That said, students in Grades 1-10 must wear a sports uniform for physical education (PE) which can be purchased on campus in our Sports Shop.

How many international students are there in your school?

This changes every year. Generally, though, our students come from more than 60 different countries in any given year.

Do you accept students from other countries?

Absolutely. We welcome applications from families around the world.

When does the academic year start?

Our school year runs from August – June. For upcoming dates, please visit our calendar.

Is there a school bus available?

We offer a school bus service through our transport partner, PotsdamBus GmbH. Please note that this is not a door-to-door service; and it is an extra cost on top of your school fees. Learn more about the bus service.

Does BBIS offer a bilingual curriculum?

No. The language of instruction is English.

Does BBIS offer an American curriculum?

No. BBIS follows the Reggio Emilio approach in Early Education (Kindergarten), and follows the Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization in Grades 1 through 10. In Grades 11 and 12, we offer the two-year IB Diploma Programme.

What is the pre-school option BBIS offers and what is the next level after that?

For children aged from three to six, we offer an Early Education programme based upon the Reggio Emilio approach. To join this programme, children must turn three by 30 September and must be toilet trained.

Students who turn six by 30 September can enter Grade 1 and follow the IB Primary Years Programme until Grade 5. This is a solid foundation to help students prepare for the IB Middle Years Programme (Grades 6 to 10) and then the IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12).

In years 11 and 12, what programme is available?

In Grades 11 and 12, we offer the two-year IB Diploma Programme.

Is there a deadline to apply for the IB Diploma Programme?

Given that the IB Diploma Programme is a two-year course we do not allow students to join us mid-year. To ensure you meet your attendance requirements, you cannot enroll later than October to join Grade 11. Please also consider that the admissions process takes about 4-6 weeks once the application has been submitted.

Can I apply just for grade 12?

BBIS can only consider students for Grade 12 if they transfer from another IB school and if they are already enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme. All chosen subjects from the previous school have to be matched by BBIS. Please contact the Admissions Office for further information and assistance at

Can BBIS IB DP graduates attend German public university?

Is German a requirement?

The language of instruction is English. Students in Grades 1-10 study German as a foreign language subject and will be placed according to their level. Students do not need to have German language skills in order to be considered for enrolment.

How much German language instruction is there?

In general, students in Grades 1-10 have 160 minutes of German instruction each week. That's two double periods. To help all of our students learn German at the right pace, we differentiate between native/A language speakers and different acquisition phases.

How many German students attend BBIS?

Generally, about 25 to 30% of our students are German.

Does BBIS accept students with learning needs?

Yes. BBIS is an inclusive school and we offer support services for students with learning needs. However, due to resource limitations, we are only able to accept a certain number of students with learning needs in each grade level.

Do students have to sit entry exams as part of the admissions process?

Students may be tested and screened depending on age and language proficiency. This may include testing in English, mathematics and German, as well as a web-based aptitude test.

Do Cambridge exams (e.g. FCE) support the application process?

Language certificates are welcome but not a requirement. Students may still need to complete BBIS assessment tests even if other certificates are provided.

Can interviews and entry testing be done remotely?

Yes, we can conduct interviews via virtual meeting. We can also arrange for testing to occur at the student’s current school, or at a student recruitment agency, the British Council, etc.

What is the language of instruction?

The language of instruction is English.

What level of English should students have entering grades 10-12?

According to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) standard, students in Grades 10 to 12 should be at a high B2 or C1 level. In Grade 9, students should be at a minimum of a high B1 or B2 level.

Do students need to sit an English test even if English has been the language of instruction through their entire schooling?

This can depend on the student’s age. Native and non-native English speakers may be tested in English as part of the admissions process.

BBIS will adjust the school fees for late enrolments; and may reimburse students leaving mid-term (termination conditions apply). Please see the full fee schedule for details.

Are there any additional fees?

Please consider the following costs in addition to the listed school fees:

  • PE uniform (up to 100 EUR) for students in grades 1 to 10
  • extra-curricular activities, optional (270 EUR per activity/term or unlimited activities for the whole school year 490 EUR)
  • hot lunch (3.40 EUR – 5 EUR per meal) optional
  • locker (2.20 EUR per month + 30 EUR deposit) optional
  • school bus (1.480 EUR – 1.925 EUR per year) optional
  • for grade 12 students: IB exam fees (about 510 EUR)
Do you offer scholarships?

No. BBIS does not offer scholarships.

Where is the BBIS campus located?

BBIS is ideally situated about 30km from the centre of Berlin. Our school campus is in the town of Kleinmachnow in the state of Brandenburg, bordering on Berlin-Zehlendorf.

How do I get a visa?

BBIS cannot assist in the visa application process for day students, however we can help with boarding students (please see the Boarding School FAQs).

Will you provide an invitation letter for the visa?

BBIS can issue an invitation letter for families wishing to visit the campus.
